The greater percentage of Surfing wetsuits are made of neoprene, the thicker the material the more warmth the suit provides. Most of these wetsuits have zippers to make getting in and out of the suit easier. Traditionally, zippers were located on the back of the suit, however many suits have additional ones located across the chest or shoulders. This makes matters much easier when trying to deal with a snug suit. In fact, technology has greatly increased stretching ability of the neoprene material. In these newer suits, the surfer actually has the ability to exit the suit through the neck.
Fit and thickness of Surfing wetsuits are not the only matters to be concerned with. Another important factor is stitching. Some suits are “blind” stitched, while others are glued, taped, heat sealed or “flat locked”. One of the factors determining which method is best for you is the water temperature. In colder waters, it is important to always select a suit which has been blind stitched. Additional items worth considering are wetsuit gloves, wetsuit hoods, and warm titanium rash vests. Whichever suit you choose, be sure the fit around the neck is snug. If you have any surfing experience at all, you know how cold water rushing down your back can feel.
